Why Relationship Coaching and How Is It Different from Marital Counseling?
RELATIONSHIP COACHING is a goal-oriented approach to solving relationship issues that helps couples identify the weaknesses in their relationship, make goals to improve their relationship, and then work to achieve these goals.
TRADITIONAL COUPLE'S COUNSELING/THERAPY focuses on observing and diagnosing pathology, addressing past traumas, and adjusting mood, personality and behavior disorders appropriately. Coaching relies on a level of client wellness and mental health symptom remission that allows for more behavioral and goal-oriented action that is not rooted in the treatment of disorders. It takes what is working and "turns up the volume" on the good stuff while helping to redirect and remediate the elements of the relationship that are "stuck" or not serving the relationship in a desirable, functional and healthy manner. Thus, relationship coaching is a perfect alternative to address relationship concerns outside of the realm of traditional couples therapy.
The techniques of relational coaching tend to be more straightforward than traditional therapy and offers couples a direct action plan to achieve their goals. While relationship therapy is rooted in psychology, relationship coaching is based on personal growth models and success coaching. Relationship coaching focuses on solutions rather than looking at the psychological root of problems, noting that sometimes couples just need solutions to their problems, not a full understanding of why or how these problems arose.
At Harmony House, we bring a unique approach to Relationship Coaching / Mentoring in that Rachael trained at one of the most respected coaching programs in the world and Bryan brings nearly 20 years of Master’s level counseling psychology experience to each session. Together they have studied relational polarity and couple's coaching with some of the most renowned names in the field.
*Note, while Bryan Dieterich, MA, LPC, CHT is a licensed professional counselor/psychotherapist with 20 years of experience (and remains licensed in several states), the work of Harmony House is rooted in relational coaching NOT psychotherapy.
